The March on Washington

1963 · a quarter of a million people at the Lincoln Memorial

About 250,000 people came to Washington to demand civil rights and jobs. Organised by Bayard Rustin and A. Philip Randolph, it was the largest political gathering the capital had seen, and it passed without a single arrest connected to the march.

From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King departed from his prepared text after Mahalia Jackson called out to him, and spoke the passage that became known as "I have a dream". An inscription in the stone marks where he stood.
