纪念
First President of the United States
Commander of the Continental Army during the War of Independence and the first president under the new constitution, Washington set the precedent that mattered most by standing down after two terms rather than holding office for life.
He died at Mount Vernon, his estate above the Potomac, and lies there in a brick tomb with his wife Martha. He freed the people he had enslaved in his will, to take effect on Martha's death.
