Isaac Newton

Mathematician who described gravity and motion

Sent home from Cambridge when plague closed the university, Newton spent two years at his mother's farm working out calculus, optics and the law of gravitation. The "Principia" of 1687 gave the same mathematics to a falling apple and an orbiting Moon.

He was the first scientist granted a state funeral in England. Voltaire, who was in London for it, remarked that the country buried a mathematician like a king.
