纪念

Charles Darwin

Naturalist who described evolution by natural selection

Darwin spent five years aboard the Beagle collecting specimens, then twenty more working out what they meant before publishing "On the Origin of Species" in 1859. The first printing of 1,250 copies sold out on the day of release.

He wanted to be buried in his village churchyard at Downe. Parliament and the scientific establishment pressed for Westminster Abbey, where he lies a few paces from Isaac Newton.
