Charles Dickens

Novelist of Victorian poverty

At twelve Dickens was sent to work in a boot-blacking factory while his father sat in a debtors' prison; the experience runs through everything he wrote. His novels appeared in monthly instalments that whole households waited for and read aloud.

He asked for a quiet, private funeral with no memorial. He was buried in Westminster Abbey instead, and the grave was left open for two days while thousands filed past.
