García Márquez wrote "One Hundred Years of Solitude" in eighteen months while his wife Mercedes ran up debts with the butcher and the landlord. When it was done they could not afford the postage to send the whole manuscript to the publisher and posted half of it — the second half, by mistake.
He had been a reporter first, and said he learned from journalism that a made-up story is believed if the details are exact. He received the Nobel Prize in 1982. Part of his ashes rests in Cartagena, the city where he studied and met Mercedes.
