In memory of

Eleanor Roosevelt

Diplomat who chaired the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Roosevelt reinvented the role of a president's wife, holding her own press conferences — open only to women reporters, which forced newspapers to hire them — and writing a daily newspaper column for twenty-six years.

After her husband's death she led the United Nations commission that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948. When it passed, the assembly gave her a standing ovation, something it had never done. She lies beside Franklin in the rose garden.
