In memory of

Astor Piazzolla

Bandoneón player who remade the tango

Piazzolla studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, who listened to his classical pieces politely, then heard him play a tango and told him that was where his voice was. He went home and began mixing tango with jazz and counterpoint.

Purists hated it and said it was not tango at all; he was threatened and refused work for years. He kept going, and by the end the argument was over. He grew up in Mar del Plata, the seaside city, and is buried at the Jardín de Paz cemetery in Pilar, outside Buenos Aires.
