In memory of

Carlos Gardel

Singer who made tango famous

Gardel grew up in the tenements of Buenos Aires and turned tango from a dance into a song. Recordings such as "Mi Buenos Aires querido" and "El día que me quieras" carried the music to Europe and North America.

He died at forty-four when his aircraft caught fire on the runway at Medellín. Hundreds of thousands lined the streets when his body finally reached Buenos Aires. A lit cigarette is still placed in the hand of the statue at his tomb.
