The First March of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo

1977 · fourteen women walking in a circle under a dictatorship

On 30 April 1977 fourteen mothers of disappeared children met in the square outside the presidential palace to ask where their sons and daughters had been taken. Public gatherings were banned, so when police told them to move on they began to walk slowly in a circle, which was not a gathering.

They came back every Thursday, and are still coming. Three of the founders were themselves abducted and killed within a year. The white headscarves painted on the paving stones mark the circle they walked.
