Gustave Eiffel

Engineer of iron

Eiffel built railway bridges, the framework inside the Statue of Liberty and, for the 1889 exhibition, a three-hundred-metre tower that three hundred artists and writers publicly denounced as a monstrous black chimney. The permit gave it twenty years.

It was saved because Eiffel put a radio antenna on top and made it useful to the army. He spent his last decades in the laboratory at its summit, studying wind and flight, and is buried under a modest stone a few kilometres away.
