纪念

Frederick Douglass

Orator, writer and abolitionist

Douglass taught himself to read while enslaved in Maryland, escaped at twenty, and became the most powerful anti-slavery speaker of his century. His autobiography sold in the tens of thousands and made the argument that no one could make better than a man who had lived it.

He edited newspapers in Rochester, advised Lincoln, and later served as United States minister to Haiti. He died at home in Washington after a day spent at a women's rights meeting.
