In memory of
Inventor and builder of the first industrial research laboratory
Edison held 1,093 United States patents, but his real invention was the place they came from: a laboratory at Menlo Park staffed by machinists, chemists and glassblowers working to order. The phonograph, a practical electric light and the film camera all came out of it.
He was almost completely deaf from his teens and said it helped him concentrate. He is buried with his second wife Mina behind their house, a short walk from the laboratory, which still stands.
