The Titanic struck an iceberg at 11.40 on the night of 14 April and sank two hours and forty minutes later. She carried 2,224 people and lifeboats for 1,178, a number that met the regulations of the day; about 1,500 died in water close to freezing.
Survival split sharply by class and by sex: nearly all the women in first class lived, while most of the men in third class did not. The wreck was found in 1985, lying in two pieces four kilometres down.
