In memory of

Simone Veil

Auschwitz survivor, minister, first president of the European Parliament

Deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau at sixteen, Veil survived; her mother, father and brother did not. She became a magistrate, then health minister, and in 1975 carried the law legalising abortion in France through an assembly that insulted her for days.

In 1979 she was elected the first president of a directly elected European Parliament. She entered the Panthéon in 2018 with her husband Antoine, the fifth woman to be buried there.
