In memory of

Rosa Parks

Seamstress who refused to give up her seat

On 1 December 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger and was arrested. She was already a trained activist and secretary of the local NAACP; the boycott that followed lasted 381 days and ended bus segregation in the city.

She lived the rest of her life in Detroit. After her death she became the first woman to lie in honour in the Capitol rotunda, and she rests in the chapel mausoleum at Woodlawn.
