In memory of
Country doctor who found the germs behind three diseases
Koch worked out the anthrax bacillus in a corner of his consulting room in a small town, with a microscope his wife had given him for his birthday. He went on to identify the bacteria that cause tuberculosis and cholera, and to set out the rules still used for proving that a particular microbe causes a particular disease.
Tuberculosis was then killing one European in seven. He is buried in the institute that carries his name, a few metres from the laboratories.
