Neruda published his first book at nineteen and served as consul in Rangoon, Madrid and Mexico City. As consul in Paris in 1939 he chartered a ship, the Winnipeg, and brought more than two thousand Spanish refugees to Chile — he called it the poem he was proudest of.
He died twelve days after the coup that overthrew his friend Salvador Allende. His house at Isla Negra had been ransacked; mourners came anyway, and his funeral became the first public protest against the new regime. He lies there with Matilde Urrutia, facing the sea.
