In memory of

Martin Luther

Monk who began the Reformation

In 1517 Luther sent ninety-five theses against the sale of indulgences to his archbishop; within two months, printers had spread them across Germany. Ordered to recant before the emperor at Worms, he refused, and was outlawed.

Hidden in the Wartburg, he translated the New Testament into German in eleven weeks, giving the language a common written form. He is buried beneath the pulpit of the church whose door his theses are traditionally said to have been nailed to.
