A Mississippi steamboat pilot before he was a writer, Twain took his pen name from the leadsman's call for two fathoms of safe water. "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn" gave American literature a voice that sounded like ordinary speech.
He was born two weeks after Halley's comet appeared and said he expected to go out with it; he died the day after its next perihelion. He is buried in his wife's family plot in Elmira.
