Borges wrote short stories that treated a library, a lottery and an encyclopaedia as places one could get lost in. He was appointed director of Argentina's National Library in 1955, by which time he was almost completely blind — an irony he noted himself.
He spent part of his youth in Geneva and returned there to die. His headstone is carved with an Old English line, "And ne forhtedon na" — and do not be afraid.
