In memory of

Johannes Gutenberg

Goldsmith who brought printing with movable type to Europe

Gutenberg combined movable metal type, an oil-based ink and a modified wine press into a system that could produce books in quantity. His forty-two-line Bible of about 1455 is still regarded as one of the finest books ever printed.

He lost his workshop in a lawsuit to his financier and died with little. He was buried in a Franciscan church in Mainz that was later demolished; the grave has never been found, and the city marks him with a museum and a square instead.
