In memory of

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Poet, playwright and natural scientist

Goethe wrote "The Sorrows of Young Werther" at twenty-four and became famous across Europe overnight. He spent the next sixty years in Weimar as minister, theatre director and scientist, and worked on "Faust" for most of his life, finishing it a year before he died.

He also studied plants, bones and colour, and was proudest of that work. He lies in the ducal vault beside his friend Schiller, in coffins placed side by side.
