Kant spent his whole life in Königsberg and is said never to have travelled more than about a hundred and fifty kilometres from it. From that one town he rebuilt philosophy: the "Critique of Pure Reason" argued that the mind shapes what it can know.
He published it at fifty-seven, after eleven years of silence. His tomb stands against the north wall of the cathedral, in a city that has since been German, ruined by war, and Russian.
