The Hillsborough Disaster

1989 · 97 football supporters crushed, and twenty-seven years of lies

At a cup semi-final, police opened an exit gate to relieve crowding outside and several thousand Liverpool supporters went down a tunnel into two already-full pens, fenced in at the front. Ninety-seven people were crushed to death, the youngest ten years old.

The police blamed the fans that same day, and a national newspaper printed it. It took the families twenty-seven years to overturn that. In 2016 a jury found the dead had been unlawfully killed and that the supporters had contributed nothing to what happened.
