In memory of

Harriet Tubman

Conductor on the Underground Railroad

Born into slavery in Maryland, Tubman escaped in 1849 and then went back, again and again, guiding some seventy enslaved people north to freedom. During the Civil War she scouted for the Union army and led the Combahee River raid, which freed more than seven hundred people in a single night.

Her exact birth year is unknown. She spent her last decades in Auburn, New York, caring for the elderly poor, and is buried there with military honours.
