In memory of

Gabriela Mistral

Poet and teacher, first Latin American to win the Nobel in Literature

Born Lucila Godoy in a mountain valley, Mistral began teaching in a village school at fifteen with no qualification but the ability to do it. She wrote poems of childhood, motherhood and grief, and helped Mexico rebuild its rural school system after the revolution.

She took the Nobel Prize in 1945 and gave the money away. She had asked to be buried in Montegrande, the village where she grew up; her body was brought back and lies under the hill she wrote about, a short walk from the school she attended.
