In memory of
Poet who was several poets
Pessoa wrote under more than seventy names, and three of them — Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos — were not pen names but whole invented poets with their own biographies, politics and quarrels with one another. He translated commercial letters for a living and published one slim book of Portuguese verse in his lifetime.
After his death a trunk was found holding some 25,000 unpublished papers, which scholars are still sorting. He was moved to the Jerónimos in 1985, near Vasco da Gama and Camões.
