In memory of

Emmeline Pankhurst

Leader of the British suffragettes

Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903 on the principle of "deeds, not words". Its members smashed windows, chained themselves to railings and went to prison, where many were force-fed during hunger strikes.

She died on 14 June 1928, three weeks before Parliament gave women the vote on the same terms as men. Her grave in Brompton Cemetery is often left with green, white and purple flowers.
