In memory of

Emiliano Zapata

Leader of the peasant revolution in Morelos

A horseman and village leader from Anenecuilco, Zapata took up arms in 1911 for one demand: that the land taken from the villages be given back. His Plan de Ayala broke with the revolution's own leaders when they would not do it.

He was ambushed and shot at the Chinameca hacienda by soldiers pretending to defect. His remains lie beneath a monument in Cuautla; "Tierra y libertad" is still written on walls across Mexico.
