A theologian with a safe post in New York in 1939, Bonhoeffer went home after a few weeks, writing that he would have no right to help rebuild Germany if he did not share its ordeal. He joined the conspiracy against Hitler while working as a double agent inside military intelligence.
Arrested in 1943, he was hanged at Flossenbürg two weeks before American troops reached the camp. He has no grave: his body was burned. His prison letters were published by a friend and are read in every language.
