A critic mocking Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" in 1874 accidentally named a movement. For the next forty years Monet painted the same subjects over and over — haystacks, the front of Rouen cathedral, his own water garden — to catch how light changes them.
He spent his last decades at Giverny, painting water lilies while going blind from cataracts. He lies in the village churchyard, a short walk from the pond.
