In memory of

Clara Schumann

Pianist and composer

Clara Wieck gave her first concert at nine and toured Europe as a soloist for six decades — some 1,300 concerts, in an age when women rarely performed alone. She was also among the first to play from memory rather than from the page, which shocked audiences.

After Robert Schumann's death she raised seven children on her earnings, taught, and edited his complete works. She wrote a piano concerto at fourteen and stopped composing at thirty-six, saying a woman should not want to compose. She lies beside him in Bonn.
