In memory of

Clara Campoamor

Lawyer who won Spanish women the vote

A seamstress and shop assistant who took her law degree at thirty-six, Campoamor was one of the first women elected to the Spanish parliament. In October 1931 she argued for women's suffrage against much of her own party — and against another of the three women in the chamber, who thought the country was not ready. She won the vote 161 to 121.

The war drove her into exile in 1938. She died in Lausanne, unable to return without facing a tribunal, and was buried in San Sebastián.
