In memory of

Benjamin Franklin

Printer, scientist and diplomat

The tenth son of a soap-maker, Franklin left school at ten and became a printer, then a scientist who explained lightning, then the diplomat who persuaded France to back the American revolution. He founded a library, a fire company, a hospital and a university.

His flat gravestone in Philadelphia reads simply "Benjamin and Deborah Franklin". Visitors have thrown coins onto it for generations, a habit that once damaged the marble.
