In memory of

Antonio Machado

Spanish poet who died in exile

Machado was a schoolmaster who wrote some of the plainest and most quoted lines in Spanish — among them the one about there being no road, the road being made by walking.

In January 1939 he crossed the Pyrenees on foot with half a million others fleeing the end of the war, carrying his mother. They reached Collioure; he died three weeks later, she three days after him. In his coat pocket was a scrap of paper with a single last line about blue days and the sun of childhood.
