In memory of

Antônio Carlos Jobim

Composer of bossa nova

Jobim took samba, softened its rhythm and married it to the harmonies of Debussy and jazz, and out of that came bossa nova. "The Girl from Ipanema", written with Vinicius de Moraes about a girl walking to the beach, became one of the most recorded songs in the world.

He cared as much about the Brazilian forest as about music and campaigned for it for years. Rio's international airport carries his name; he lies a few kilometres away, near the bay he wrote about.
