In memory of

Antoni Gaudí

Architect of the Sagrada Família

Gaudí worked out his buildings not on paper but with hanging models of string and small weights, letting gravity find the shape an arch wants to take. He gave the last forty-three years of his life to one church and the last twelve to nothing else, living on the building site.

On 7 June 1926 a tram struck him on the Gran Via. Dressed shabbily and carrying no papers, he was taken for a beggar and left in a pauper's ward; he was recognised the next day and died on the third. He lies in the crypt of the church, which is still unfinished.
