In memory of
Diarist, died at fifteen in Bergen-Belsen
Anne was given a diary for her thirteenth birthday, three weeks before her family went into hiding in Amsterdam. She wrote in it for two years and had begun rewriting it as a book, having heard on the radio that wartime diaries would be wanted afterwards.
After the arrest she was sent to Auschwitz and then to Bergen-Belsen, where she died of typhus with her sister Margot, probably in February 1945 — the exact date is not known. The camp was liberated weeks later. Her father published the diary in 1947; it has since been read in more than seventy languages.
