Working as a patent clerk in Bern, Einstein published four papers in 1905 that changed physics: on the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special relativity and the equivalence of mass and energy. General relativity followed ten years later.
A German Jew, he was abroad when Hitler came to power in 1933 and never returned. He asked to be cremated and his ashes scattered without a marker, so that no place could become a shrine; the Institute for Advanced Study, where he worked, is the nearest fixed point.
