In memory of

Alan Turing

Mathematician, codebreaker, founder of computer science

Turing described the universal machine that underlies every computer, then led the team at Bletchley Park that broke the German naval Enigma, work credited with shortening the war by years.

In 1952 he was prosecuted for homosexuality and forced to undergo hormone treatment. He died at forty-one of cyanide poisoning. He received a royal pardon in 2013; the law that followed cleared thousands of other men. His memorial sits on a bench in Manchester, where he is shown holding an apple.
