Ada Lovelace

Mathematician who wrote the first algorithm for a machine

Translating an Italian paper on Charles Babbage's proposed Analytical Engine, Lovelace added notes three times longer than the original. They included a step-by-step method for the machine to compute Bernoulli numbers — recognised as the first published algorithm written for a computer.

She also saw further than Babbage, suggesting such a machine might one day compose music. She died of cancer at thirty-six and, at her request, was buried beside the father she never knew, Lord Byron.
