Sojourner Truth

Preacher and abolitionist, born Isabella Baumfree

Born into slavery in Dutch-speaking New York, she walked away with her infant daughter in 1826, a year before the state freed her. She then went to court to recover her five-year-old son, sold illegally into Alabama — and won, one of the first Black women in the United States to win a case against a white man.

At forty-six she took the name Sojourner Truth and spent the rest of her life speaking for abolition and for women. She could not read or write; the speeches that survive were written down by others, sometimes carelessly.
