纪念

Louis Braille

Inventor of the reading system for the blind

Blinded at three by an accident in his father's workshop, Braille devised a six-dot alphabet at fifteen, adapting a military code for reading messages in the dark. His own school banned it for years; it was adopted only after his death.

He was moved to the Panthéon on the centenary of his death in 1952. At the request of his home village, his hands were left behind in the grave at Coupvray.
