Jeanne d'Arc

Peasant girl who led a French army at seventeen

A farmer's daughter from Domrémy who could not read, Joan convinced a doubting court that her voices came from God, was given troops, and broke the English siege of Orléans in nine days. She stood beside Charles VII when he was crowned at Reims.

Captured, sold to the English and tried by a church court, she was burned in the market square of Rouen at about nineteen. A retrial twenty-five years later declared her innocent; she was made a saint in 1920. Her ashes were thrown into the Seine so that nothing would remain to bury.
