Engineer of bridges, tunnels, railways and ships
Brunel built the Great Western Railway from London to Bristol so level that it was nicknamed Brunel's billiard table, threw a suspension bridge across the Avon gorge, and built the largest ship in the world three times over.
He worked himself to death at fifty-three, collapsing days before his last ship sailed. Not everything succeeded — an experimental atmospheric railway failed expensively — but the tunnels and viaducts he cut are still carrying trains a hundred and eighty years later.
