The Atomic Bomb Dome

Hiroshima · the one building left standing under the blast

At 8.15 on the morning of 6 August 1945 the bomb detonated some six hundred metres above a point almost directly over this building. Everyone inside died instantly. Because the blast came from nearly straight above, the walls were pushed down rather than sideways, and the steel frame of the dome stayed up.

The city argued for years about whether to pull it down. It was kept, and stands unrepaired, held together by discreet reinforcement. Around 140,000 people in Hiroshima were dead by the end of the year.
