Frida Kahlo

Painter of Coyoacán

A bus accident at eighteen broke Kahlo's spine and pelvis and left her in pain for the rest of her life. She began painting in bed, with a mirror above her, and made some fifty-five self-portraits out of what she could see.

She had one solo exhibition in Mexico in her lifetime and attended it in a four-poster bed carried into the gallery. Her ashes are kept in a pre-Columbian urn in the blue house in Coyoacán where she was born and died.
