Duke Ellington

Composer and bandleader

Ellington wrote for particular players rather than for instruments, shaping parts around the exact sound of the men in his orchestra, some of whom stayed with him for forty years. He composed around a thousand pieces and kept the band on the road almost until the week he died.

He disliked the word jazz and called what he did simply music. His funeral filled St John the Divine in New York; more than twelve thousand people came.
