The Berlin Airlift

1948–49 · a city of two million supplied entirely by air

When the Soviet Union closed the roads, railways and canals into West Berlin, the Western allies chose to fly everything in rather than fight or withdraw. For eleven months aircraft landed every few minutes, carrying coal, flour and medicine — more than two million tonnes in all.

Seventy-nine airmen and civilians died in crashes during the operation. One pilot began dropping sweets on handkerchief parachutes to children waiting by the fence, and others copied him. The blockade was lifted in May 1949.
